My mom’s birthday was this week and I wanted to make her a really fun cake so I started brainstorming and the winner was a synchronized swimmers cake! It sounded fun and the idea of little ladies swimming through blue frosting was too cute to pass up. It turned out really nice so I thought I'd show you guys and include the printables so you can make one too!
The actual cake was made up of three layers, a vegan chocolate cake with a vegan brownie recipe sandwiched in between and a vegan buttercream frosting to top it off. For the chocolate cake I used the same recipe as the chocolate doughnuts but I made two batches because the single version only makes one 9” round cake. For the brownie layer I made a half batch of this recipe plus I added in a cornstarch egg using 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of cold water, mixing until smooth in a separate cup. Then adding it to the finished brownie batter and again mixing well. The vegan buttercream frosting I made turned out so amazing I had to give it it's own stand-alone post here. Seriously you need to try it!
Okay back to the printables, I designed them myself in Adobe Illustrator then printed them out on thick white card stock paper. The ladies have a front and back image so they would look good from the back too. I would first print the ‘front’ image with the ladies facing you then I put the paper back into the printer and print the ‘back’ image with the ladies facing the other way. This might take some trial and error but I’m sure you'll get it right. Because of the printer, some sheets were better aligned than others but nothing you would really worry about. I did the same thing with the ‘legs’ image but I printed the same image on both sides. Because of the cake’s size I didn't end up using all of the cut outs but I included them for you to try.
Next I carefully cut out all of the pieces trying my best to find the right balance between swimmers missing a knee and having a white border. You find whichever suits your needs, you can also leave a thick white rounded border too - it's up to you.
After they were all cut out and ready to go I simply stuck them into the frosting in a design I liked. You could also use these for cupcakes or anything you can stick paper into, heck print them out and tape them up if you’d like. I think they would be great for a swimming party or summer party or anyone who likes swimming!
Below is the link to the printables, they are free for personal use only (meaning you can’t sell the product or the designs). I want to keep them free for everyone to use.
I hope you have a great week and that everything goes swimmingly ;) !
