Growing up we used laundry hampers, the collapsible mesh kind with the thin strips of metal holding them up. They were lovely when you first got them but once they started filling up they wouldn’t hold their shape as well; not to mention it was easy to over-stuff it and thus put off doing your laundry.
When Adam and I were living in our first official apartment together we had coin operated laundry machines in a separate building on site. We bought a large laundry hamper/basket that was kind of marketed as an all in one solution. The only problem was when it was full it was actually a load and a half to two loads of laundry, depending on how tightly packed it was.
I don’t think I’m exactly a minimalist, I’m more of a practical-ist, as it were, and it felt impractical to have a hamper that wouldn’t equal a normal load, would allow you to prolong washing your laundry, or to have multiple items for the same job of holding/transporting your laundry.
A year later at our next apartment, we bought a nice sized laundry basket from the Salvation Army. We didn’t need it but it “sparked joy” as Marie Kondo would say. It was simple and looked relatively new. We didn’t buy it that day but it was still there when we went back a few days later. I couldn’t stop thinking about it so we went ahead and purchased it. I loved the look of it and size/shape. That’s when it dawned on me: use your laundry basket as a hamper and you will not only have one less item in your house to maintain and replace once worn out (I’m looking at you mesh laundry hampers!) but an actual gauge to when you need to do laundry.
Now we throw our dirty clothes into the laundry basket that we keep in our closet on the floor. Once it’s heaping we know it’s time to do laundry. It’s the perfect gauge and, like I said, you don’t have to put up with multiple items that do the same job of holding/transporting your laundry.
Would you guys do this? Do you already do this? Do you have any laundry-simplifying tips? I’d love to hear! Have a great day everyone! See you on Friday!
